If you've been reading my blog for a while then you know about my experimentations with coffee. In a trip last fall I tried Thai Coffee and now on my recent Hells Cayon trip I tried another alternative. This time we tried the PRESS-BOT Coffee Press.
Here's a shot of Tim during our recent trip holding a serving of coffee with the PRESS-BOT in the bottle.
The PRESS-BOT made great coffee. In fact, everyone in the group enjoyed it. The only complaint was that it was occasionally difficult to remove from the Nalgene bottle. You can see in the upper picture how the circular screen folds up but the tolerance is so close that it can be a bit of a hastle. Of course, it could have been the bottle we had with us, who knows.
As an added bonus, the PRESS-BOT only weighs 2.8 ounces! |

I bought one of the PRESS-BOTs. I had used a french press at home before, so I was familiar with the device. I had some coarsely ground sumatran coffee. The coffee was great. The clean-up was a problem. With limited water and the need to pack out the grounds, clean-up was a hassle. The curved shoulder of the bottle makes it hard to extract the grounds. |

I think the bottle type makes a difference. The actual Nalgene brand bottle has less of a curve than the nalgene-compatible bottle shown in the picture, and may make it easier. It did make great coffee, however. |

I bought a press-bot after the hells canyon trip. Used it at least 8 times (every morning in Glacier NP last week) now and love it. Have got extracting the plunger down to a science, but clean-up is an issue. I think that if I was in an tough situation with water, I might leave the plunger fully depressed, and pour water for drinking over the top, and save cleaning the grounds for when a water source is found. I definitely recommend this device. |
